The crash took place around 2:32 a.m., Monday, Aug. 26, when a 2008 Nissan Altima struck two utility polices, knocking down both of them and sending live electrical wires on top of the vehicle on Canal Street, just north of Ludlow Street, said Stamford Police Sgt. Jeffrey Booth.

When police arrived on the scene, they found that three of the six occupants were able to exit the vehicle; three were trapped in the vehicle, he said.

According to Booth, Kymoni Pollock, 19, died at the scene, and NiShawn Tolliver, 18, died at the hospital.

Jerry Diaz, 18, of Stamford, the driver of the vehicle, and passenger, Amaiya Callahan, 19, both of Stamford, were taken to the hospital in critical condition.

Passengers, Erica Stephens, 19, and Alontia Moore, 20, both of Stamford, were taken to the hospital in serious condition, police said.

"Due to the wires being energized, Stamford firefighters had to wait for Eversource to de-energize the lines," Booth said.

Once the lines were de-energized, firefighters were able to remove two of the three occupants. The third occupant that was left in the vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene, Booth said.

The initial investigation revealed that the Nissan was traveling southbound on Canal Street at a high rate of speed and just south of Henry Street, Diaz lost control.

"The vehicle struck the first pole, breaking it into several pieces, then continued until striking the second pole and coming to final rest," said Booth, the supervisor of the department's Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Squad.

The second pole was also snapped in half.

"At this time speed appears to have been a factor in this crash," Booth added.

The investigation is ongoing and continuing. Stamford Police CARS is asking anyone with information regarding the crash to call (203) 977-4712.
